CHAPTER EIGHTY-NINE

Eyes watched Kagen ride through the snowy pine forest.

The deer and foxes and bears and wolves watched him. Thousands of nightbirds in the trees watched him. Other eyes watched him, too. Eyes that burned with fire. Eyes that were slitted like serpent eyes but looked out of human faces. Eyes of creatures that had crawled out of holes in the ground in which they slept through the centuries. Eyes that belonged to things that had never before lived on earth but that had come through the broken pathways.

They all watched Kagen and his string of horses ride past.

Some watched with indifference, others with a biting curiosity. Some feared what they saw, while others hungered for the meat and blood of man and beast.

And one set of eyes watched from far away. Eyes whose lids were closed and whose body was crushed beneath hard-packed dirt and chiseled stone, whose grave had been sealed so long ago that not even the most ancient legend hinted at it. A race of sorcerer-warriors had each shed their own blood to bury the monster, and their magicks had kept the world safe for uncountable years.

For all those years the thing beneath the earth slept. And dreamed.

Now, though, it was awake. Buried. Hungry. And very much awake.

Beneath all that weight of dirt and stone, and separated by many hundreds of miles, it stretched out with senses vast and strange, and it beheld Kagen of Argon riding through the snow.

In its dark grave, the ancient thing smiled.
